Bring your soul with you, as Zander's program will put it through a workout. Britten's Sinfonia da requiem is an early work, written as a memorial to his parents, by a composer who touched Zander's life as a very young musician. Bruckner's Symphony No. 5 is a monumental work whose aspirations match the spiritual grandeur of a cathedral. Zander's engagement with this work is fresh and deep, with his 2009 Telarc recording nominated for a Grammy award. This recognition by the recording industry puts the spotlight on Zander's life mission of bringing classical music to the widest possible audience, since this performance CD is supplemented by a full-length disc in which he explains the work for a lay audience—a unique approach that he has also brought to his Mahler recording cycle for Telarc.
